Yoga is a very old tradition which has much to offer in today’s lifestyle, helping us to feel more peaceful in a chaotic world. It helps harmonise and balance the mind, body and emotions through using postures, breath and relaxation techniques.

Yoga develops a stronger and more flexible body which can benefit many specific ailments. Relaxation is so important for health and well being as it relieves the anxieties and frustrations of a stressful lifestyle. Yoga is for everyone – just go at one’s own pace. Those who practise yoga are advised to wear loose clothing and bring a blanket or sleeping bag. NB It is advisable that expectant mothers wait until after the 12th week of pregnancy.

The programme presenter, Heather Kemps, trained with the Yoga Fellowship of NI in 1997. She completed second stage teacher training with YTTC in 2000.  Heather sees the practice of yoga as a tool to help individuals develop their own self-awareness, enabling them to feel more in control, therefore leading to a more balanced and fulfilling life.

Maura and Mary’s most recent blog

Dear Friend of the Centre,

Another year, another brochure and a whole new set of challenges/ opportunities opening out before us all in our daily lives.

Globally life would appear to be turning upside down and inside out all at once! As this greeting is about to go to press we see a real

threat to the future of the euro/eurozone, austerity programmes oppressing the poor while the wealthy remain protected from material loss, Britain exercising a veto, the Arab Spring sweeping throughout the Arab world, earthquakes in some parts of the world, floodings elsewhere and drought in other regions where some of the flood waters would be life saving were they to turn up there – and so on and so forth.

The old order is certainly changing apace and structures of churches and states which appeared to be near-invincible are showing ever deepening cracks. So, what are we to do?

It is good to remember that change of this magnitude has ever been part and parcel of life on earth, and indeed throughout the entire cosmos for that matter, so we can count on having an in-built capacity to deal with its ups and downs as they turn up in our own everyday lives. Good to remember too that, as a people, we have come through challenging times in the past and we can do so again.

The Christian scriptures tell us that “when I am weak, then am I strong, for power is made perfect in infirmity”. And again, My grace is sufficient for you.”(St. Paul)

The practice of awareness, of being present to each present moment, (as opposed to being obsessed with the past or overwhelmed by thoughts of an uncertain future), has a strong track record of enabling us to keep our cool and engage with the vagaries of life as they arise.

Awareness, in turn, can be helped along by concentrating on the ever-present, gentle movement of our own breath. A daily routine of this kind costs us nothing but it has the power to keep us connected to that “grace” referred to above which is the life force, the ever-present energy, the spark of the divine within. It is this which can see us safely through whatever life may bring by way of hardship and amplify life’s joys beyond all measure.

May 2012 be a transforming experience for us, one and all, grounded in the power of Spirit.
